SPACE GAMBUS: EXPERIENCE – Review by Lorenzo Pancini

SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIENCE

Dreams, memories, places, realities, concepts, poetry, emotions, melodies, ideas, irrationality, visions, lighting ...
A torrent of sounds ... airy melodies that are mixed with everyday sounds, sound effects, samples, percussion, video game sounds, melodies, texts spoken and meditative sounds ... an empty and meditative space...
Listening to our minds are compared with experimental sounds and images they evoke

Different cultures and sounds here are mixed, are isolated from their social and cultural context ... you create something new with old sounds, the music is isolated from its usual context to understand how much wonderful is it. Everything is throw in the game, re-discussed, revised, although retain and remains his original shape. (Is like to compose a collage with every part different from each other) ... something like Dada, the Fauves, Fluxus!
It 'nice to think the sound itself is nice to isolate it, to perceive it, to play with it...
With playing way we find freedom... with playing we face reality (it is a reality game).
Playing with music, this is the intent, the music must never be exploited and never subject to approval.
In that mix and rebuild we arrive to a new object, then a new history...
Doing so the sounds have value, are seen later in a new light, truer!

He wanted to come back then the primitive idea of music... the primordial idea that an object thrown against another object produces noise... sound ... the idea that any sound can become music!
He wanted to reactivating the ancient sounds that are never old because it still playable!
As an old traditional song that is sung in the days running, with our voices (on a road or in a bar for example ...)
So nothing is ancient and nothing is modern... there is only the sound ... and with this you can speak.

The Gambus of the title is the tool that pervades the album. Everything is wrapped in the mysterious and mystic notes of this hot instrument, typical of Arab culture (called Oud, which in Arabic means wood).
A wooden box engraved, specially almond shaped, on it pulled multiple double strings and one single that let enveloping sound, full, relaxing and ancestral...that remind us to the rays of sun...
A sort of thread ... the tracks are wrapped in melody, that touch, that gift, that emotion is the melody ... melody used to speak, tell, tell, do poetry, emotions...to guide us in the mystery of music itself!

The result is strange, deep, real, innovative and real ... the momentum, we have said is the game ... the album is poetic, a spacecraft without not bride nor constraints isolated from everything, from any background, that carrying his noises...without genres.

EXPRESSING EXPERIENCE THROUGH MUSIC IN ART

Music comprises of sounds that are pleasant and have been harmonized into various melodies. The art of music is the music in art. Music itself is capable to distill experience into the essentials of a personal touch. It has the essences of sound, metaphor, image, feeling and rhythm that act as remedies when it is visualized in art.

Expressing the experience through music in art is like applying the lines of lyrics. It helps symbolize the meaning of emotions and empiricism, particularly if it is inspired by the evocative qualities of the muse.

Unlike words, our imaginative language is nonjudgmental. When lyric is formulated as an image, rhythm represents the interpretation of music. The analysis, apprehension, assimilation and clarification of the music can be reflected as a meaningful piece of art.

Imagery is a function of the right side of the brain. Although any of the senses can produce an imaginative impression, visual imagery can be anything from a recognizable object to an abstract. Music cannot be seen but can be heard. The impact of the impulse from the ears to the artistic manipulation of the artist’s hand will make us see the music and the story of the art.

A theory by Bendetto Croce states that beauty is a statement of expression and it is not a character of music and art. Croce interprets beauty as an experience. The vision of an artist or intuition is considered as a piece of art. Therefore, music and lyrics is completed when it is viewed and designated in an artist imagination.

Historically, in 1902, the Union of Austrian Artists planned an exhibition as homage to the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven, whose music suited the secessionists idea of the 'gesamtkunstwerk' or comprehensive artwork. Gustav Klimt was invited to contribute and created a monumental wall cycle, the famous Beethoven Frieze, which you can admire all year round at the Secession.

Today, featuring music as an expression in art, each artist will be able to produce artworks by the interpretation of the rhythms, composition and lyrics through experiences; and their own exposure and seasoning of life.

RINA SHUKOR

Denyut NADI

Hairan, namun itulah kebenaran. Wallahualam.

A. Samad Said: at Seventy-five

A Samad Said - reprinted in Expat magazine, previously in Senses of Malaysia

"This year (2010) has already seen poet/writer/playwright/Artist A. Samad Said’s 75th birthday; his collaboration with artist/composer/designer/musician Kamal Sabran (of the Space Gambus Experiment fame), putting music to Pak Samad’s poetry, and a newly proposed exhibition of Pak Samad’s ‘paintings’, curated by Nurhanim Khairuddin, at the prestigious National Art Gallery (NAG) in Kuala Lumpur."
