"Space Gambus Experiment album can be a suitable beat for a CatWalk song" by HASMA AHMAD

SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT:- To be honest..I don't really buy music CDs..even this one here, I accidently, stumble upon it from my dear husband- Moloko. Whenever he puts any of his collections on air..I myself will ended up listening to the albums that he listened to..and that's includes this one here that I'm reviewing right now. What seems to trigger me because..it's a work of my fellow senior whom we used to study together in the same IPT years ago..and I simply cannot recalled who is this electronica experimentalist, artist, visionary, researcher...etc.

SGE the album..to me as a person who in loved with fashion & teaches this subject for an honest leaving..I may say it's a soothing, cosmic fusion blend of sounds that's suites for my lounging sessions on the lazy weekends. Not only that..this album is a statement of future..That we Malaysians a gaining our recognitions not only in Fashion Industries, but also musically (electro-ambient)..or the best word is ART!

Very ambitious leap for Kamal and team..I sincerely think that few of the tracks in this album can be a suitable beat for a CatWalk song..provided the theme of the design should be aligned with the same subject that Kamal are trying to present. It's an elegant futuristic Instrumental album, SGE also invites listeners to not only judge this album musically, but also technically..and artistically.

Space Gambus Experiment is a 10 tracks of Sci-Fi cosmic Instrumental sounds..Created with a blend fusion mix of Electro-Acoustic by Kamal Sabran himself, gearing up with his most loyal collaborator Zulkifli Ramli, on Gambus (Oud). SGE is an independent album..released by the same TEAM lead by Kamal Sabran..and it only cost you RM$20.00 to make it to be send in front of your door steps. It's Made In Ipoh..A PURE Product Of Malaysia..and it does grab my ears and attentions..so why not you...

ESSENTIAL LISTENING: SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT by MOLOKO

SGE experimental LAB

SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT IS:
KAMAL SABRAN- ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC
ZULKIFLI RAMLI- GAMBUS@OUD

SPACE GAMBUS EXPRIMENT-not only it's a COOL titled but it's also a COOL Experimental, instrumental electro-'ambient' album that will make us believes, this is the sounds coming from the outerspace. Electro-Acoustic is the SPACE! & Gambus is the EARTH! That's the way I look at it. A brilliant 'metamorphism' for the both subjects, & now Kamal Sabran, finally presenting his ELEGANT SCI-FI AMBIENT SOUNDS TO US! It's not an easy task..it's also a bold moves..but when it comes to deep passion, everything turns to JOY!

RADIOHEAD, PORTISHED, AIR, NINE INCH NAILS, SUICIDE, DAVID SYLVIAN, GARY NUMAN, THE FLAMING LIPS, TOM WAITS, BRIAN ENO, RACHID TAHA, KHALED, PETER GABRIEL, NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN, ETC.. you list it, you name it, maybe SGE has a bit of this & that, a dash of him or theirs, but DARE I MUST SAY- SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT IS HONEST & ORIGINAL. Not only that, it is the very owned, genuine sounds of Kamal Sabran & Zulkifli Ramli. This Duo certainly had 'Blown' me away by this released.

The SGE Album only cost RM$20. It contains 10 instrumental ambient tracks, that will insure, your listening session to be an unexpected exploration of Unique Soundscape based on Kamal's obsession on the mysterious sounds in the outerspace. The SGE Album lenght less than 30 minutes, but honestly- it will satisfy listeners & it has this 'Gem', that will make ones to be addicted to it. Kamal is the ELECTRO GENIUS, behind all this fusion of cosmic sound,- & indeed, without doubt, he rendered SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT towards it's own CULT FAME!

Best to be played while you're in the verge to start-out your day, or while lounging at home, I mean relaxing. As for me,- I listen to it, late at nite while updating my Blog, or waiting for 'In The Mood For Sleeping'. Very inviting, calming & warmth atmosphere to listen at, with a fairly, not so bad sounding quality of a $20 CD,- A Product Made from Ipoh, Malaysia. On the iPod-Standard stock Ear-phones, it may sound fairly fair, but on standard car audio, or a decent priced Hi-Fi, it will resonates SUPERBLY! Trust me on this!

SGE CD comes with an interesting minimal cover, Booklet design by Kamal Sabran(himself) & team, themselves. A BRAVO again.

MY SCALE ON SGE IS 10/10!

AN ESSENTIAL FROM A VISIONARY MALAYSIAN ELECTRONICA DUDE! AWESOME BRO! A MUST HAVE!

SGE advances further into space, let it then go inward by Adam James Davis

A gathered collective of artists as musical space agency, helping to realise Kamal sabran and zulkifli Ramli syntheses and intersections. Why go into space? Because there is new music up there! Why bring it to us? Because there are new rhythms and atmospheres to organise and test, to play along to and combine with the sounds of the universes within our own brains as well...that is, if there is any distinction at all. Music, not noise? Noise, not music? Anti-this, anti-that!? Music -and- noise! That is more like it. Me -and- you...collaboration, not competition. Does a little universe expand and contract to every one vibration of the gambus' strings? As the SGE advances further into space, let it then go inward. Let us then strum and chime to the sonifications, to the musics of our own brainwave activity. The Innerspace Gambus Experiment...

space gambus experiment : satu rebiu ringkas tapi ikhlas by MAOI

Lu patut beli SGE..

Lagipun, seperti yang gua pernah kata dulu..
Kalau kita tak sokong produk tempatan..
Siapa lagi?

Music from Jupiter: Merging Worlds. SGE interview by Thesmalls.com

Sonik Al Kosmik by Space gambus Experiment is currently No 1 in the web.

The mesmerizing sounds of The Space Gambus Experiment are the result of a unique collaboration between musicians Mohd Zulkifli Ramli (Gambud/Oud) and Kamal Sabran (electro – acoustic). This blend of traditional and contemporary Malaysian music is also merged with radio waves received from the planet Jupiter.

Kamal Sabran is an artist, designer and researcher. His work stands at the intersection of art, science and technology. His paintings, video art, short films, sound art and installations have been shown at art spaces and festivals internationally. In search of ever widening means of artistic expression, Kamal constantly looks for collaborative opportunities with artists, poets, photographers, designers, musicians, filmmakers, researchers and scientists. He is based in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Who is Kamal Sabran, in your own words?
I am soul-searching. I am energy, vibrating. I’m looking for other frequencies to connect.

If you could summarize what the Space Gambus Experiment is, in one sentence how would you describe it?

Music from outer-inner space.

When did you start to think and then develop the idea behind the Space Gambus Experiment – what was it that inspired you to fuse science and art in this unique way?
It was in 2006, after I finished my residency with the National Space Agency (NSA), that I realized all of my compositions were incomplete.

I put all the tracks away on a hard disk and worked on other works until in 2009, when I met Zulkifli Ramli, the gambus/oud player in the well-known Malaysian folk ensemble called “Dewangga Sakti”.

For your info, Gambus is not only a musical instrument. Malays also believe it acts as medicine to heal some health problems as well as soul and spiritual ailments. We began experimenting and blending the mystical sound of Gambus in my unfinished tracks that contain cosmic radio waves at my home studio in Ipoh. With no big ambitions, we just experimented with the source but finally we found out that we were making this “outer-inner space” meeting point in our music. We were also surprised that the gambus/oud perfectly blended in with my compositions like a jigsaw puzzle. Gambus and cosmic radio waves created an amazing atmosphere that was more than what we expected.

How did you think to experiment with radio waves and celestial material?

As a sound artist and experimental musician/noisician, I’ve been collecting sound from nature. Most of my sound art is based on sound that I find within my surroundings. So one day, I’m thinking of how to get sound that is not from this earth. Then I started thinking about space sound. Sound from outer space. So I started to do some research on it. Luckily I was selected as artist-in-residence for the National Space Agency, Malaysia in 2005. There, I conducted a research project called “Sonic Cosmic Music from Outer space” where I finally composed music based on cosmic radio waves collected by a radio telescope in collaboration with scientists there. I finally performed it live in the planetarium with a fellow artist, musician, and poet in 2006. I have published the research as my MA thesis at University Teknologi MARA, Malaysia in 2007 with Dr. Kamarudzaman Md Isa as my supervisor. Now I am pursuing my PhD under a fellowship program at the University of Science Malaysia.

Tell us how you gained access to the Malaysia National Space Agency? Tell us about your time there?
It was in 2005 when the NSA opened their residency program. My proposal was accepted by the NSA after several rounds of interviews. I was the first artist at the program. The one year residency was very interesting and inspiring for me - developing, working with and catching sounds from places in outer space that I could never ever imagine before. Full access to the technology and expertise in the NSA gave me completely new “tools” that I was eager to play with. It was a great experience that I will never forget for my entire life as an artist.

How did you discover and decide to use radio waves from Jupiter? Why Jupiter?

The discovery of cosmic sources of radio waves is the most important in Radio Astronomy – which is the science of studying radio waves from objects in space. Stars, planets, galaxies, clouds of dust and gas and other matter in space are sending out energy that travels in pulses or waves. There are a number of cosmic radio waves that we can capture through a radio telescope. For example, background radiation and sun bursts sound like a lion roar. But Jupiter’s radio waves offer a lot of unique and colorful sounds and it is one of the “brightest” radio sources in the sky. Jupiter sounds (referred to as Jovian radio bursts) consist of “L bursts” like ocean waves crashing on a distant beach. “S bursts” produce a staccato of rapid popping sounds with a beat that is somewhat similar to woodpeckers. I found that Jupiter’s radio waves evoke the sense of “continuum of spatial imagery and emotion”, deep listening and sensations of floating, cruising or flying.

What are the other components/instruments/sounds you have used to create the Space Gambus Experiment?
I used a lot of traditional Malay instruments like Gendang, Seruling, Gamelan, Gong, Serunai, Tabla and Rebab along with other instruments like drum, trumpet, accordions, bass, violin, guitar, sax and many more. I was also experimenting with noise sound sources like toys, water, sand, soil, wind, radio signals, poetry, plastic bag, circuit bending and hundreds of layers of tiny sounds. All of these ingredients blend with an electronic abstract pattern that I programmed using computer software. There are also many precious sounds contributed by the collaborators. I recorded and mixed everything myself at my home studio using lo-fi and low-tech equipment.

How many people, and who, have collaborated to make the project come true? How did you find these other talents?

SGE comprises of 15 collaborators from all over the world – North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and Malaysian local musicians. Namely, Adam James Davis (UK) Alvari Lume (Finland) Antonio Mainenti (Portugal) Arcano 18 (Ecuador) Cathy Fern Lewis (Canada) Derek Crofut (US) Goh Lee Kwang (Malaysia) Gunhild Seim (Norway) Jim Leftwich (US) Lily Taylor (US) Lorenzo Pancini (Italy) Matt Middleton Crude (New Zealand) Masoud Takavar (Iran) Markus Wenninger (German) Zenmetalshirt (Switzerland).

I have worked with most of them previously and some of them I just met recently. And 90% of them I never met face to face - we only communicate online, through Facebook and email. We regularly collaborate online by exchanging sound files. I have compiled some of the sound projects online, and you can have a listen at them here http://www.reverbnation.com/kamalsabransuperfriends

I have also involved scientist, researcher, filmmakers, writers, designers, poets and photographers as crew for the Space Gambus Experiments production. I am lucky to have artists and curators, Nurhanim Khairuddin & Syed Omar from Teratak Nuromar, both who help a lot in producing the CD. And also my beloved wife, Dalina Dahalan, who as studio manager ensures that I work in the best conditions.

You are clearly a renaissance man when it comes to sound and music, what do you think makes a sound inspiring?

All source of sound is very unique and inspiring on its own. There is a story behind it. It is up to someone to appreciate it by looking at it from a different angle and thinking about it deeply. I believe sounds have a great effect on you physically, mentally and spiritually.

What do you think about The Smalls Street Sounds and the Sound Map? Do you think interesting things can come from audio and visual artists sharing their works and collaborating in this way?
The Smalls Street Sounds is a very good and innovative project for sound artists to participate in and contribute to. I believe by sharing and collaborating through audio and visual means, the artist will come out with more interesting artworks. As usual, experimental artwork will produce a new perspective and open more possibilities for new directions and findings.

What sound(s) inside the Sound Map of The Smalls Street Sounds event do you like the most? Why?
I like all sounds in The Smalls Street Sounds. Like I say, each sound has its own interesting stories. So I enjoy listening to the story being told by the sound maker. However, the track I like the most is entitled “Bart Train” uploaded by Mike from San Francisco. The sound of the train was recorded was like a symphony of music. The movement of the train creates and captures various moods, space and emotion.

What kind of sounds would you like to see more of in the Sound Map? What kind of sounds did you wish it were easier for artists to find online?

I am interested in sound sources from very tiny living creatures, cells, microorganisms, brain waves, aura frequencies and other things that we can’t hear with just our ears. They all have a very special sound quality that I believe can help in making new art. Imagine if we can blow up those tiny sounds, how we will be surprised by their potential. On the other hand, I also wish it were easier for me to find ambient sound from different places online and in real time. Imagine if we could merge the whole world by only clicking our finger.

What advice would you give to aspiring sound artists and filmmakers who wish to use sound in creative way to tell their stories?

Sound has it own life; therefore it has its own stories. By selecting the right sound for your artwork, it will then live naturally.

Talented Perak by YUSUF MARTIN

Kamal Sabran I met, in Ipoh, at a mamak restaurant to talk about his forthcoming music CD entitled ‘The Space Gambus Experiment’

If you look very, very carefully there is a long list of very talented people associated with the enigmatic Silver State of Perak. From the ubiquitous literary talents of Tash Aw (writer) to the eminently delectable actress Datuk Michelle Yeoh, their stars forever shine in the heavens of the international firmament.
Aside – In my haste to impart this, I am not, of course, forgetting either my old mate, the silver-tongued Patrick Teoh (broadcaster, acerbic writer and thespian), or fellow writer, and thoroughly nice individual, Preeta Samarasan.

However, what you may, or may not know is that there are still many mega-talented people, who actually prefer to live in the Silver State, rather than write about it from afar. They are brave, hearty souls who shun the bright lights and big cities to live in the comparative quiet of a rural setting, wherein they may listen to their hearts and comprehend their muse – not read the SMS screen and facebook themselves out of existence.

It was recently, having well girded my loins, I stepped out from my misnamed studio, kick-started my monolithic jeep and reached out to the cowering world at large, to meet with some (hopefully) fellow humans.

In my questing I was hugely fortunate enough to meet with two charmingly gifted sons of Perak – Raja Shahriman b Raja Aziddin (aka Raja Shahriman), sculptor, painter and all round nice guy, and, equally as nice, contemporary artist, musician and academic Kamal Sabran.

To be fair, I only met Raja Shahriman en passant as it were – while he was accompanying my buddy, the artist Rafiee Ghani, in Kuala Lumpur, but shortly excused himself to return to his beloved state and family. I sincerely hope to meet more fully with Raja Shahriman at a later date, perhaps in his residence at Kuala Kangsar, where he creates the sculptures he is known for. Kamal Sabran I met, in Ipoh, at a mamak restaurant to talk about his forthcoming music CD entitled ‘The Space Gambus Experiment’ – more of that later.

Raja Shahriman currently has an exhibition of his profound sculptures, paintings and sketches at the Galeri Petronas, KLCC, Kuala Lumpur; profound, in the sense that within the painted, twisted metal forms lies a greater depth of meaning, and significance too.

While it is the three dimensionality of Raja Shahriman’s sculpted forms which greets the visitor at first glance, on second spine tingling glimpse, one notices the intricate play of light on the works, and, obviously, the vividness of the shadows. For it is within the forms of those pronounced shadows, spread from the sculptures that give them life, which the artist’s greatness comes into play. Through Raja Shahriman’s mastery of his medium, he deftly reveals the vicious shadow creatures, which inhabit the rabid consciousness of the brutal warrior – his martial spine a bandolier of bullets.

People of a nervous disposition might stand in the corner of one of the galleries, staring at Raja Shahriman’s sculptures, waiting for the blatant shadows to come to life, so eerily real are they, in an abstract way. These same visitors, out of the corner of one eye, may see shadows, as if in a wayang kulit play, engage in their incipient warfare, rising out from curved metal flames and doing battle with tendril-like hands and protuberances, which may in our imaginations, be fashioned as swords.

While the shadows of Raja Shahriman’s sculptures eerily poise for battle, Kamal Sabran’s music CD soothes those parts that other music CDs cannot soothe, with its unique blend of sounds from space and music from the traditional Malay gambus (a lute-like instrument).

Just back from Kuala Lumpur, promoting his short film – LUMPUR, for 15 Malaysia, Kamal Sabran spoke with me about his collaboration with Mohd Zulkifi Ramli, and the unique music they have created for the CD ‘The Space Gambus Experiment’.
An observant reader will have noticed the word – Space in the title of this CD, as in The Space Gambus Experiment, and maybe scratched an itchy follicle or two on its significance. To put your inquisitive minds at rest, I am not referring to some post-hippy, pseudo-psychedelia, but in this case – real Space, as in “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”, the National Space Agency and the planet Jupiter.

Kamal Sabran developed ‘Sonic Cosmic Music from Outer Space’, while he was ‘artist in residence’ at the National Space Agency and some of that celestial material, along with the more traditional gambus music, graces this present album. It is therefore a credit to both Kamal Sabran and to Mohd Zulkifi Ramli, that together they have been able to create such a distinctive and richly melodic sound.

Ulasan album SGE oleh JIWARASA

Bagaimana saya mahu mulakan catatan saya tentang album ini. Album ini memang lain dari yang lain. Ia sebuah karya eksperimen.

Saya bayangkan bagaimana seorang anak Malaysia meneroka ruang angkasa planet Musytari.
