"Kamal always have interested with cosmic idea and Einsten relativity. For him science and art is one thing while sex and pornography is another thing. a silence is not a silence. Theres always music in between. And in this case, it could comes from outer space. And when a signal is blend with music, heres what you got.
Space gambus Experiment brought another new dimension to its kind of music.
So its not too much if to say that this music collaboration he produce is like science meets traditional. Or science meets the ..gambus. As I said, this is no ordinary music. Space Gambus Experiment is a project group by Kamal Sabran and Zulkifli Ramli. Their musical style is based on various experimentation on Gambus/oud with electro-acoustic approach in music making.

Kamal Sabran - Zulkifli Ramli : Space Gambus Experimental Projek

Perhaps it was Zulkifli Ramli who spearheaded their move to a highly experimental songs composition using Gambus or Oud on their tracks. While chatting on the Face Book one day, the musicians spotted a same wavelength on their music interest in Malays folk song. “It was my great ambition to explore traditional instrument on my tracks” Kamal recalls, “and eventually Zul yelled to me, ‘I’m a Gambus player!’ so we think that it will be a fantastic project. And we did”

It was our fist “real” face to face meeting when Zul came down to Ipoh, Kamal’s hometown. After a brief tour on the small town, they started to record their materials in Kamal’s home studio. They both quickly became attracted to the unplanned tracks and improvised a long the way and finally become the unity of sound that is quite the same as what their visualized on their mind. “It’s really a worth experimentation” Kamal says, laughing. “I asked Zul, ‘what should we do with all of this tracks now?” “Let’s make it free download stuff” Zul adds simple.

Kamal Sabran - Arcano 18 : Experimental freestyle sonic exploration

Francisco Castellanos a.k.a Arcano 18 (Ecuador)

Arcano18 in his note on the project stated,"Total freestyle, absolute freedom of creation.Arcano18 sounds are bent circuits from an old radio, while Kamal uses flute, percussion and traditional sounds from Malaysia, and the result is a short but enjoyable journey to far, exotic, unknown places..."
For Kamal," Arcano18 circuit bending sound is a powerful yet so wild that i cant stop thinking of making noise music to the next level. Inspired by the Arcano's track, i developed a kind of acoustic noises that i made from some Malays traditional instrument, and when combined; its turns to be so ambiguous and yet rich with variety sound texture.

*ARCANO18 is noise/experimental project of Francisco Castellanos, artist/musician from Ambato-Ecuador. ARCANO18 was born in 2001, with a unique, dark experimental style and a wild first performance..... since then ARCANO18 is generating/destroying sounds and performing in parties (some included skin perforations and wax), art expositions, grind/metal concerts, festivals, streets, public places, and studio/live collaborations with Hondonada (Ambato freestyle), Detonador (Ambato drumnbass), Tinta Moniri´s Ouranoise (Quito noise) and 3moroadie5, the newest noise band with Lucho Pelucho (Sal & Mileto/Funda Mental), Kiko Jácome (Cafeterasub/Hononada), Tinta Moniri (Ouranoise) and Pablo (Tom Cary from Spain).

Kamal Sabran - Lily Taylor : Sound Collabo

Lily Taylor

Lily in her notes, "Kamal's use of texture allowed a great amount of space for me to work with. I developed a vocal line based off of the tonal suggestions of the xylophone track, then layered harmony parts- improvising each take. Working on this piece has reinforced my desire to explore the use of textural contrast in my compositions."
Kamal add," Lily got a beautiful range of voice that colors overall composition, and she balancing the heaviness of noise to kind of soprano singing style..and it turns perfectly!" The track is like a crossover between chaos and soothing moment that create dramatic sonic experience. They both are working on the new material, and more to come after this. Watch out!


*From Boston, MA to Dallas, TX to Santa Fe, NM to San Francisco, CA, Lily Taylor captures the attention of audiences of all kinds. She attended College of Santa Fe, and obtained a BA in Contemporary Music with a focus in vocal studies. Taylor now teaches voice lessons, performs, and composes in San Francisco, CA. Her most recent solo material explores the dream world, and universal experiences that make up the collective consciousness. Her solo performances are a must see. Taylor is also involved in collaborative work with aerial dancer/ performance artist Rain Willson, Guitarist/ Sound Scape designer Michelle Webb, and Aural and Visual artist, Sean Miller, as well as Kamal Sabran.
